目前，探月工程嫦娥六号任务正按计划开展研制工作，计划于2024年前后实施发射。
嫦娥六号任务开展月球背面采样返回。迄今为止人类已进行的10次月球采样返回均位于月球正面，月球背面整体相对月球正面更为古老，且存在月球三大地体之一的艾特肯盆地，具有重要科研价值。嫦娥六号任务预选着陆区位于月球背面南极-艾特肯盆地，以期发现并采集不同地域、不同年龄的月球样品，增进人类对月球的认知。
为顺利完成月球背面航天器与地球之间的通信，我国新研制鹊桥二号中继通信卫星，计划2024年上半年发射。
为增进国际合作，嫦娥六号任务搭载了法国的氡气探测仪、欧空局的负离子探测仪、意大利的激光角反射镜、巴基斯坦的立方星等4个国家的载荷和卫星项目。
与此同时，我国正在加快推进国际月球科研站大科学工程，希望更多国际伙伴加入，共同拓展人类认知疆域，为和平利用太空、推动构建人类命运共同体作出贡献。
